M.A. in Mathematics: Biomathematics Track

The Master of Arts in Mathematics program provides an opportunity for individuals to pursue advanced study in mathematics and to develop skills that can lead to success in today's technologically oriented society. Whether the goal involves applying mathematics to solve problems in business and industry, teaching in higher education or preparing for further graduate study in mathematics or related fields, this program enables each student to pursue a course of study that is appropriate for his or her interests.

There are two tracks available in the program:

  • The General Mathematics track has been of special interest to high school teachers seeking to enrich their knowledge of mathematics, as well as those looking to enhance their credentials in order to teach at the community college level.
  • The Biomathematics track provides an opportunity for students to focus their study on applications to biomedical problems.

Rowan University undergraduates majoring in the Bachelor of Science in Mathematics program can apply to the accelerated B.S./M.A. program allowing them to earn both the B.S. and M.A. degrees in five years.


  • Total semester hours required for program completion: 30 Semester Hours (s.h.)
  • In addition to the course requirements outlined below, students will pass a comprehensive examination given by the Department of Mathematics.
  • Thesis Requirement: None

Admissions Requirements

The following is a list of items required to begin the application process for the program. There may be additional action or materials required for admission to the program. Upon receipt of the materials below a representative from the Rowan Global Admissions Processing Office will contact you with confirmation or indicating any missing items.

  • $65 (U.S.) non-refundable application fee

  • Bachelor's degree (or its equivalent) from an accredited institution of higher learning

  • Official transcripts from all colleges attended (regardless of number of credits earned)

  • Current professional resume

  • Typewritten statement of professional objectives

    • Provide reasons for pursuing the program. Describe how you might use this program to advance your career (educational goals beyond the master's level, if applicable, are also relevant).
  • Two letters of recommendation

    • Letters of recommendation should be from professional administrators and include information, which attests to applicant's ability to pursue a graduate degree
  • Minimum undergraduate cumulative GPA of 2.5 (on a 4.0 scale)

  • Applicants are expected to have completed at least 18 semester credits at the undergraduate-level in Mathematics, including subjects such as Calculus through Vector Analysis, Linear Algebra, and Differential Equations.

    • For those planning to pursue the General Mathematics track, it is highly recommended that applicants have completed upper-level Mathematics including Modern Algebra and Introduction to Real Analysis.
    • For those planning to pursue the Biomathematics track, it is highly recommended that applicants have completed some background courses in the Biological Sciences.

Submitting the Application Form is only the first step to beginning the admission process. All of the required materials listed above must be received on or before the application completion deadline for your desired entry term to be considered for admission to that term. We encourage you to complete the application form and begin submitting your materials at least one month before the deadline indicated.
