M.S. in Civil Engineering & Environmental Engineering

The Master of Science in Engineering (M.S.E.) program at Rowan University effectively prepares individuals to respond to the changing needs of engineers today. This program provides students with the necessary knowledge, skill set, and training to effectively contribute to the engineering workforce. Students have access to higher level courses leading to a graduate degree, and are involved in professional development opportunities which increase the breadth of understanding and application of engineering principles.

Students can choose between a thesis track, and a coursework track. Students may also work on a project, which may be counted toward a coursework track degree. Most full-time students work on funded research projects, leading to a thesis. Most part-time students select the coursework track. In order to be eligible for a Research Assistantship, students must select the thesis track.

The Civil & Environmental Engineering specialization allows students to develop an interdisciplinary focus through their coursework and thesis topic. Graduate students work with faculty with expertise in transportation, geo-technology, structures, water resources, and the environment. Interdisciplinary areas include mechanics and materials, and sustainability. This specialization also includes the following focus areas: Mechanics and Materials; Signals, Systems and Computational Intelligence; Sustainability; and Transportation Engineering.

Curriculum

The Rowan University Master of Science in Engineering program requires the completion of 30 semester hours (s.h.) and thesis research/engineering project. 6–9 of the required semester hours can be Thesis Research/Engineering Project.

Admissions Requirements

The following is a list of items required to begin the application process for the program. There may be additional action or materials required for admission to the program. Upon receipt of the materials below a representative from the Rowan Global Admissions Processing Office will contact you with confirmation or indicating any missing items.

  • Note about Foundation Courses: The following undergraduate courses must be taken at an accredited institution: Chemistry I, Physics I, Calculus I, II, and III, Linear Algebra, and Differential Equations. (The graduate program advisor may specify additional required undergraduate-level coursework to supplement the applicant’s background before taking any graduate courses.)

  • $65 (U.S.) non-refundable application fee

  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program OR Bachelor's degree in the Science or Mathematics disciplines from an accredited institution of higher learning (The graduate program advisor will assess the background of the applicant and evaluate their suitability for admission to the program)

  • Official transcripts from all colleges attended (regardless of number of credits earned)

  • Current professional resume

  • Typewritten statement of professional objectives

    • Provide reasons for pursuing the program. Describe how you might use this program to advance your career (educational goals beyond the master's level, if applicable, are also relevant).
  • Two letters of recommendation

  • Minimum undergraduate cumulative GPA of 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale)

  • Optional Interview (If an interview is required, students will be contacted directly by the Faculty Admissions Committee regarding the interview. The interview can be in person or via telephone.)

Submitting the Application Form is only the first step to beginning the admission process. All of the required materials listed above must be received on or before the application completion deadline for your desired entry term to be considered for admission to that term.
